International Virtual Course In Mathematical And Quantitative Methods For Islamic Economics And Finance |
FMIPA |
|
Gantina Rachmaputri |
"ITB hosts International Virtual Courses (IVCs) annually in a variety of fields. It has hosted at least three in the field of mathematics:
In 2021 with Universiti Sains Malaysia on Islamic financial mathematics and statistics
In 2022 with Universiti Teknologi MARA on Islamic financial mathematics
In 2022 with various collaborators on combinatorics
In 2023 with various collaborators on applied mathematics in finance
ITB’s IVCs were initially held for three main reasons:
1. To overcome the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in providing a high-quality educational experience for ITB students
2. To facilitate a transfer of ideas related to the application of quantitative methods to Islamic finance
3. To meet the demands of the emerging digital economy, especially in the financial sector
The continued success of these IVCs has encouraged the committee to not only hold it again this year but to always find ways for the course to provide value for all participants, instructors, and students alike.
For this year, the committee would like to focus on establishing a competitive standard of mathematical and quantitative competency in Islamic economics and finance given today’s digital age. In the development of Islamic economic and finance theory, there is still much need for applying mathematical and quantitative rigor well-established in conventional economic and finance theory not to replace Islamic jurisprudential rigor but to complement it. As for industrial practice, there is still room for more sophisticated quantitative techniques aside from those parts of data science that are currently in vogue such as machine learning.
Examples that should easily come to mind are financial management topics such as portfolio optimization and good empirical fundamentals. More advanced techniques include the application of the real options approach to evaluate and develop various features of financial products instead of just traditional discounted cash flow methods. Another example is the development of good actuarial practices for takaful operators. At the same time, the quantitative techniques may be similar, but the specific context of takaful operation may require its own considerations such as the constraints imposed by Islamic liquidity instruments. Such techniques would also be beneficial to those more philanthropic and social finance-oriented such as for managing waqf funds, zakat modeling, and the design of non-commercial takaful networks.
The committee feels that the urgency of securing the development of human resources of sufficient quantitative sophistication to serve the needs of Muslims worldwide is self-evident. This IVC therefore represents a call to action bringing together individuals who share the goal of ensuring that this need is met for generations to come.
Objectives
1. To facilitate the application and development of mathematics for the advancement of Islamic economics and finance theory and practice
2. To facilitate discussion regarding the need and development of mathematical and quantitative methods that are readily usable in the practice of Islamic economics and finance
3. To facilitate the development of human capital for Islamic economics and finance, particularly regarding quantitative competencies
4. As a forum for academics, practitioners, and students to share ideas and develop collaborations in Islamic economics and finance theory and practice"
